Hot lava: or why I love sulfur in skincare

#sulfurinskincare

I love the benefits of sulfur in skincare so much that I wanted to make a second blog post about it. You can find my first exaltation here.

i’ll keep this one short and simple. We’re quite proud of Grit, which is our cleansing scrub made with sulfur and additional skin comforting ingredients like beta-glucan and allantoin. You don’t have to worry about Grit drying your skin out because we formulated it with mature skin in mind. This isn’t that crap you used as a kid that left your face feeling like a thrift store leather sofa.

Let me extol the benefits for you.

Sulfur is great for the skin because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which help treat various skin issues, especially acne. Here’s why it’s so beneficial:

1. Fights Acne-Causing Bacteria: Sulfur has antibacterial properties, which help kill acne-causing bacteria. It reduces acne by drying out excess oil and bacteria, clearing pores, and preventing new breakouts.

2. Reduces Oiliness: Sulfur acts as a mild drying agent, which helps control excess sebum (oil) production. For people with oily or combination skin, sulfur can balance oil without being overly drying.

3. Exfoliates Dead Skin: Sulfur promotes mild peeling and helps shed dead skin cells. This keeps pores clear, minimizes the risk of clogged pores, and gives the skin a fresher, smoother appearance.

4. Anti-Inflammatory: For inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis, sulfur can help reduce redness and swelling, making it useful in managing symptoms.

5. Keratin Regulation: Sulfur regulates keratin production, a protein that can clog pores if overproduced. This can be particularly beneficial in treating conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

6. Antifungal Properties: Sulfur can also treat fungal infections like seborrheic dermatitis by keeping fungal growth under control.

Sulfur-based skincare products like masks, soaps, or ointments are often recommended for people with oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin conditions because of these combined benefits. Grit combines sulfur with renewable pumice (no plastic beads!) and glycerin to keep your moisture barrier in tact.
